Our second national park – Congaree National Park in South Carolina

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

We visited our second national park- Congaree National Park, a cute little hidden national park in wet lands in South Carolina.  We learned about all of the small animals in the park (including mosquitoes), started our Passport To Your National Parks books, and the girls became Junior Rangers of Congaree National Park.  Check it out: Congaree National Park.  It’s free to enter, there is hiking and also a boardwalk trail to enjoy the park from.  In addition, the rangers give free canoe tours, although during the winter, they’re only offered on Sundays, so we missed them.

Our tenth state capitol – Columbia, SC

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

We visited our tenth state capitol in Columbia, South Carolina.  The girls learned that the state bird of South Carolina is the Great Carolina Wren, the state flower is the Yellow Jessamine, and South Carolina’s state nickname is the Palmetto State.  They also learned that President Andrew Jackson was born in South Carolina and that the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in 1861.
